John Michael Maloney, born on April
6th 1946, at the Grace Hospital in Ottawa, was the first of six children born to Elaine
and Jim Maloney. He excelled in his studies at Our Lady of the Annunciation
School in Hull, receiving numerous awards.
At an
early age Johnny joined the Cubs and later on, the Boy Scouts. He became an altar boy when he was very
young, and in his early teens entered St. Pius 10th Junior Seminary,
where he remained for 4 years.
At the
age of 16, he enrolled in a Pre-Science Course at the University of
Ottawa. He remained at the University
for the next five years, until he
graduated with an Honours Degree in Geology.
In the fall of 1967, during his final year at the University, John
married his sweetheart, Mary Rose Burke also of Ottawa. Mary Rose graduated with a Degree in Mathematics from the University of Ottawa as well. After that, they moved to Calgary for several
years and then to Whitehorse in the Yukon for one year. John worked during that time as a Geologist
with Texaco Explorations Canada. Around
the same time, he co-authored a book on his work.
While Still living in
Calgary, John and Mary adopted their two oldest children, Michael and Lisa at
the ages of 10 days and 3 months respectively.
Later, in Whitehorse, on December 2, 1974, their third child Carolyn was
born.
Shortly after that, they returned
to Toronto, and Johnny worked with the Department of Indian Affairs and
Northern Development until his untimely death
in February of 1980 of a brain hemorrhage caused by an aneurism. At this time, John and Mary were very much
involved with their local Parish of St.Timothy’s in providing relief for the
Vietnamese Boat People. In fact, at the time of Johnny’s death they had been
providing lodging, in their own home, to one of the families the Parish was
helping.
Johnny always promoted respect
for the dignity and sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception until
natural death, and was active in the pro-life movement as well. Often times on a Sunday afternoon he joined daddy and a few others who prayed outside the Civic Hospital for mothers who were having abortions and for their babies who were killed
Besides his love for his family, his
work, and his fellow human being, Johnny had many other interests. He loved music and always joined the choir of
his local Parish Church. As well, he loved to act and he was in several plays
at Saint Pius 10th
There
were at least 100 people involved in one of the productions put on by the
Whitehorse Choral Society, in which he was involved. Johnny especially loved visiting Mount Saint
Patrick with his dad and uncles.
He had
such a great love for this place where his great- great-grandfather had
settled, that when he died, his ashes were buried next to his ancestors who had
arrived there so many years ago.
He loved fishing, hiking, and spending time
outdoors simply gazing at the stars and meditating on what it would be like to
be a geologist, collecting rocks on the moon.
Because Maureen and Johnny were so
close in age, they were always together as children, and Maureen has memories
of John that go way back to when they were very young. She remembers the time when Johnny was three
years old and she was two and they both wandered out of the back yard and into the nearby woods. Mom and dad were frantic of course, but
everything turned out fine and the two little escapees were found a few hours
later by dad and some of the guys from work.
Maureen will always remember
Johnny holding her hand and saying to her “I’ll always take care of you Maureen”
She believes he still does. .
We love you Johnny! We miss you!
